Artist Statement

The mountain peak jutting out of fog, purple against the setting sun; the waves breaking in a white crest against a riotous murky green blue ocean; or the soft light through fog on the beach blurring the lines between sea and sky.  I let the physicality of medium — the bleeding pigment of the watercolor run and create clouds, light, space, and waves. Or how the thick painterly quality of the oils work to create solid mountains, expressive light-touched clouds, thick rolling fog, and delicate curving branches. The medium and my experience guide the process.

I try to capture a moment within the paint, a feeling of place and color and light: light through a watery whisper of clouds, the arc of a tree, the light on the ocean, the path curving up a mountain, and the people.
