“Art is not a mirror held up to reality, but a hammer with which to shape it.” –Bertolt Brecht

Art should not simply be a commodity: an object or idea to sell for profit, something to be critiqued by experts, or an investment for collectors. Art and creation are an expression, a response, and as Brecht says, a hammer. This is not to say that artists should not be paid for their work, but that their work should not be forced to reflect the market and as it has traditionally - the desires of the patrons.

Although the breadth of my work occasionally reflects specific recipients, the pieces closest to my heart reflect the political and social context I respond to. The world I respond to is one in which people suffer. Lack of clean water and food, oppression from governments and occupying forces, the alienation of modern day life - the list is endless. But throughout my experiences, I am repeatedly moved by human resilience and resistance in the face of suffering. To me, this is beautiful.

I have exhibited at Muddraker's Cafe and La Pena Cultural Center in Berkeley in addition to creating two pieces for the In Search of Roots exhibit I curated in the spring of 2008 at the Chinese Cultural Center in San Francisco.
